At Bitterne CE Primary School, we aim to develop a love of writing and reading that will benefit our pupils throughout their lives. As a core subject, and a skill for life, we want to ensure that children understand the significance of reading and writing and its application in everyday situations, both in childhood and their adult lives and future careers.
The skills that children develop during their English lessons are linked to and applied to in every subject across our curriculum. At the start of every writing unit, we give our pupils hooks in order to engage and motivate them. These include trips, visitors, drama, role play and books. Nurturing these skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening enables each child to communicate and express themselves in all areas of their work in school, out of school and to prepare them for later life.
Our overall aim is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with the knowledge and command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through reading for enjoyment.
