Music

To ensure a high-quality music education is provided, at Bitterne CE (VC) Primary school, all children receive weekly music lessons taught by specialised music teachers from Showcase Performance Company.

All children take an active part in learning music through performing, improvising, creating, composing, listening, reviewing, evaluating, singing, exploring how music is created, produced and communicated. They will also learn to develop an understanding of the history of music.  Each year, children will build upon the skills already learnt and broaden their knowledge and understanding.

In Year 1 and 2, children begin to develop an understanding of how to play an instrument through learning to play the recorder.  In year 4, every child learns to play an instrument through the Showcase Performance Company ‘Music on the Map’ programme. These sessions are led by specialised music teachers.  Children further develop a love of music and are eager to continue learning instruments in future years.

There are a wide variety of instruments that children can choose to play in peripatetic lessons, in school.  Showcase Performance Company provide specialist teachers to teach the children instruments such as guitar, piano, violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet and Bb horn and instruments are provided.  There is also the opportunity for children to join a drumming club, where the children learn percussion skills.

Children have the opportunity to play as part of the group in the school orchestra.  During the year, there are opportunities for the children to share their skills when they perform to parents in our music concerts.
