At Bitterne CE Primary School, we believe that learning takes place through the use of language.  We use language to build our view and opinion of the world and our community.  We continue to learn, develop and embrace or knowledge and understanding of the English language throughout our lives.  Literacy unites all aspects of language, both writtn and spoken.  Our staff focus upon developing the speaking and listening, reading and writing skills of each child.

Literacy is taught throughout the day with work appropriately differenciated to match all abilities. We also provide the children  with discrete phonics and spelling lessons for approximately 1.5 hours each week and handwriting lessons for 30-45 minutes each week.

With parental support, we want our children to:

  • speak clearly and confidently in any situation.
  • listen actively and respond appropriately, developing knwledge and opinion.
  • read fluently for both pleasure and information.
  • write clearly and with confidence in any given genre.
  • use spelling rules, phonics and grammar accurately.
  • be able to proof read their own work, edit their ownwork and make appropriate improvements.
  • write consistently with neat, legible and joined handwriting.
The skills that children develop in literacy are linked to, and applied in, every subject of our curriculum. The children's skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening enable them to communicate and express themselves in all areas of their work in school.

Our overall aim is to nurture in the children a love of literature and language, and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives.
