About Bitterne CE Primary School

At Bitterne CE Primary School in Southampton, learning is about much more than simply imparting knowledge. Therefore we use modern teaching methods to suit the individual learning needs of our students and to build teamwork and a sense of social responsibility. Our modern classrooms are well-equipped, enabling the use of different teaching styles. We believe that it's vital to provide individual support for every student.

The school uses the Lettters and Sounds Scheme in the teaching of phonics in KS1.

We use the Oxford Reading Tree as the main progressive reading scheme.  However, this is supplemented with books form other schemes.

Our philosophy

  • we encourage our students to develop their social skills and give them room for personal development
  • we encourage our students to strive towards meaningful goals and support them as they solve the problems they encounter so that they gain increased levels of autonomy
  • our philosophy is applied to all levels of our teaching plan. Students are encouraged to get involved in designing the way that they are taught.
  • in short, we encourage our students to develop their own personality and to discover their own individual paths towards adulthood.
  • we promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, and individual liberty and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
